When the fog shuts the harbour

Eight games in the net loft
for the days the boats stay tied up

Some mornings the fog sits on the cove so thick that not one dory leaves the stagehead, and Dulse climbs the ladder to the net loft above the cannery. An old laptop lives up there between the twine bins, bookmarked with eight free browser games: an airline, a zoo, a small hospital, tank battles, a frontier camp, a Roman arena, a comic fantasy quest and a whole galaxy. Each one opens in an everyday browser tab with nothing to set up first.

Airlines Manager: Tycoon

Airline empire on a live world map · Business & tycoon

When the fog keeps every plane on the ground, Dulse builds an airline of his own across a live world map dotted with real airports. Routes get drawn, aircraft are matched to how many people want each one and the fleet is bought on borrowed bank money, while research work and cabin service set what a seat on each route can fetch. Every move turns into a figure to weigh.

Good for
Players who like a reason behind every figure.

What the eight cost: nothing to begin with, though each one sells optional extras inside its game.

01

No toll at the loft ladder

You can sign up to any of these at no charge and keep going for months: routes, enclosures, wards, tank matches, camps, expeditions, quests and fleets all sit in the free version.

Alongside the free game sits each studio's own store: premium currency, quicker timers, cosmetic odds and ends. Plenty of veteran players have never looked inside, and where the whole family shares one laptop, a spending lock is usually tucked in the account settings.

02

A first fog day up the ladder

Tap a button here and the game's official website opens in a fresh tab. Registration usually comes next, and a couple of minutes later your airline, zoo, hospital, tank, camp, gladiator, hero or star empire is ready.

A walk-through tutorial greets you in nearly every one of them. Finish it; the menus make sense far sooner that way than by clicking about at random.

03

Games that keep working while you are on the wharf

Close the laptop lid and most of the eight go right on working: planes fly their routes, patients turn up, expeditions come back, quests wrap up and fleets stay aloft. Dulse checks once over morning tea and again after supper, and that is usually plenty.

OGame needs the closest watching, since ships in transit are fair game for other players. Launch long voyages only when you know you will be back before they land.

04

Keeping your logins as tight as a barrel

Whichever studio runs a game also keeps its login, so type yours only on that studio's own real website. Give every title its own password, the way Dulse keeps a separate key for every shed on the wharf, and switch on a phone code wherever one is offered.

No real member of a studio will ever need your password. Anyone in chat dangling free premium currency for your login is angling for the account itself, so cut the line.

How these eight earned a spot up the ladder

  • Every one starts in an ordinary computer browser, so a fog day in the loft begins without any setup.
  • Joining costs nothing, and the heart of each game stays within reach for players who never set foot in a studio shop.
  • The spread is wide: planes and routes, a zoo, hospital wards, tank fights, a western camp, an arena, a silly hero and a star empire.
  • Real people fill the servers, so the guilds, alliances, leagues and rival camps have someone at the other end.

No. Each of the eight opens straight into a desktop browser, as is. Airlines Manager: Tycoon, My Free Zoo, Tanki Online, Shakes & Fidget and OGame have an optional phone app too; Kapi Hospital, WildGuns and Gladiatus stick to the computer browser.

No. Joining is free everywhere, and you can play the heart of each game without spending; anything extra is purely up to you.

No. Dulse only keeps the bookmarks; separate studios build and host each game, and a button here just opens its official site.

No. Different studios own them, so every game wants its own registration on its own website.

My Free Zoo or Kapi Hospital, both gentle and cheerful. OGame and WildGuns ask for the most patience and planning.

Most do. Routes fly, patients arrive, expeditions come back and fleets keep travelling with the tab closed, so drop in at sensible times.

Yes. Shakes & Fidget has guilds, OGame has alliances, Tanki Online has team battles, and Airlines Manager: Tycoon, WildGuns and Gladiatus put you up against other players.
